Why the tyres are wearing on one edge
Potholes, kerbs and a heavy hit on the quay wall knock geometry out. The first sign is usually a feathered inner or outer shoulder, and a set of tyres that should have done 25,000 km looking finished at 12,000. Alignment is cheaper than another set.
We will not set tracking on a soft tyre. Pressures first, then the rack. If you have just bought tyres from us, ask us to check the geometry before you leave.
What we actually measure
Laser tracking at Grattan Quay measures toe, camber and caster on cars and vans. Truck tracking is a different machine at Newrath. DIY “a bit of toe” is how cars fail NCT geometry.
- Pulling left or right on a level road
- Steering wheel off-centre on the straight
- Inner or outer shoulder wear on a relatively new tyre
- After a kerb, a pothole, or new suspension parts
Cars at Grattan Quay, trucks at Newrath
The equipment is not interchangeable. A Sprinter is not a Golf, and a tractor is a different conversation again.

How to get it checked
Tell us what the car is doing. We measure it. If the arms are bent we will tell you rather than chasing a number that will not hold.
- Send an enquiry or call with the make, model and what you have noticed.
- We confirm a time at the right depot.
- Pressures are set, then we measure and adjust. You pay in the workshop.
Do not skip tracking on a new set
A new set on a car that is still toed-in will wear the same way as the last set. If you also need tyres, say so. We can often fit a set while the geometry is done, or send you to the shop for a size we hold on the passenger rack.
What to have ready
- The vehicle
- What you have noticed (pull, wear, off-centre wheel)
- Recent work: tyres, bushes, accident
